Some of the factors that brands must keep in mind while selecting a veterinary nutraceutical manufacturer. Pet owners, vets, and animal-health businesses are increasingly seeking science-backed nutrition, moving beyond traditional approaches. Veterinary nutraceuticals are a growing component of preventative veterinary care, ranging from digestive and joint support, immunity, skin and coat care, and even overall well-being. To brands new to the market or wanting to grow in this segment, picking the right manufacturing partner isn’t only a question of capacity or price. It takes the right partner to assemble formulation knowledge, quality systems, regulatory, scalable manufacturing, and the capability to take the idea to a consistent finished product. The major considerations brands need to take into account.

1. Veterinary Formulation Expertise

One of the main concerns of a good manufacturing partner is to realize that animal nutrition isn’t just human nutrition minus the human component. Formulation decisions can be affected by intended use, palatability, nutritional requirements, ingredient tolerance, life stage, and species. Brands can benefit from the formulation expertise of a manufacturer who can assess products and their ingredients, formulation stability, and product positioning for specific applications. Being able to create formulations which meet specific nutritional requirements can also enable brands to diversify their products portfolio and go beyond the generic product.

2. Quality and Traceability of Ingredients

It all starts with the raw materials for a finished nutraceutical. Brands need to examine the standards and procedures that a manufacturer uses to qualify suppliers, verify incoming ingredients, monitor specifications, and track ingredients. This could feature identity, potency, microbiological, contaminants, and other quality determinations depending on formulation. Documentation and regulatory acceptance have become even more crucial for international markets. To support a product during its entire life cycle, a manufacturer should be able to supply appropriate technical and quality documentation.

3. Robust Quality and Manufacturing Systems

Quality needs to be integrated throughout the manufacturing process, from receipt of materials to delivery of the finished product. Important indicators of a proper manufacturing system include good manufacturing practices, documented processes, trained personnel, equipment controls, sanitation, batch records, testing, calibration, traceability, and corrective actions. For animal food, for instance, FDA requirements encompass up to date GMP and risk-based preventive controls. Brands should therefore not rely solely on certificates to hand out and master the actual working of a quality system on the manufacturing floor.

4. Product Testing and Stability Support

A veterinary nutraceutical, during the entire shelf-life, must be within the ranges of quality specifications for which it was designed. The ability to perform proper analytical testing and stability testing should be available to a capable partner to assess such factors as potency, physical attributes, microbial quality, and product performance over time. The stability may also affect the packaging materials and storage requirements as well as the use of expiry dates. This is especially crucial for vitamin products, sensitive botanicals, oils, or other sensitive ingredients, such as probiotics.

5. Regulatory and Documentation Capabilities

Veterinary products may be subject to various regulatory requirements based on the ingredients, intended use, claims, species and target market. It is, therefore, important for a manufacturing partner to bring regulatory expertise to help evaluate ingredients, prepare product documents, consider labelling issues, assess claims, and comply with market requirements. For instance, AAFCO offers guidance on animal-feed ingredients, labelling and feed regulations in the U.S. and FDA guidelines are relevant to animal food products and some veterinary products. A regulatory route in India is also governed by categorization and marketing of the product. Brands need to make sure their manufacturing partner is familiar with the framework – but not view compliance as a last resort.

6. Manufacturing Capacity and Scalability

A laboratory formulation will need to be reproducible in commercial production. Brands should consider the following: Is the manufacturer equipped with appropriate infrastructure, equipment, process controls, and production capacity to develop and scale up? Manufacturing different dosage forms can also help brands establish a larger portfolio without the need to have multiple manufacturing partners. More importantly, the manufacturer should be able to keep the consistency as the quantity of goods increases. This can simplify the difficulties of scaling from a pilot batch to commercial scale production.

7. End-to-End Development Support

Ideally, the manufacturing relationship should start before the manufacturing process begins.

A good partner can help brands in formulation development, sourcing, prototyping, testing, scale-up, manufacture, packaging, and documentation. This holistic approach can minimize the number of handoffs or vendors and can aid in the early detection of technical or regulatory issues. This can be particularly beneficial for companies creating a long-term nutrition brand for veterinary products, as new products, dosage formats, and market needs emerge.

Selecting a Partner for long-term growth

Choosing a veterinary nutraceutical manufacturer is more than just about finding a facility that can manufacture a batch. Brands require a partner who can integrate research, formulation expertise, quality, regulatory understanding, testing, and scalable manufacturing.

A structured evaluation covering these areas can help brands assess whether a manufacturer is equipped not only to develop today’s product, but also to support tomorrow’s product pipeline.

At Zeon Lifesciences, research and formulation expertise, advanced manufacturing capabilities, quality systems, and end-to-end development support come together to help brands build innovative solutions for evolving veterinary nutrition needs.
